Conservation Rangers at Rainton Meadows

A collage of six street art murals by artist Frank Styles, displayed on a pale green background with the word “RANGERS” in bold teal letters across the centre. The artworks include colourful spray paint cans and tools, a grey building covered in geometric murals, a triangular building with stained‑glass‑style figures, a sailing ship labelled “City of Adelaide 1864,” a small green‑and‑white painted building, and a vivid mural of faces and abstract shapes in red, blue, and white.

About the event

Conservation Rangers is a regular group for 14 - 18 year olds who wish to learn some practical conservation skills, improve ecological knowledge, and enjoy the outdoors.

This session will offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the re-birth of our Education Den as something very different!

Thanks to a partnership with Sunderland Museums, we have had mural artist, Frank Styles working onsite to transform our Education Den from its original dull grey to a multi-coloured explosion of colour, telling a street-wise story of a year in the life at Rainton Meadows.

Frank ran a session with some of our Rangers and youth groups allowing them to undertake some of the spray painting of the Den area. Building on from this work, he has now completed a full mural of the entire front of the den – and linking wall.

And it has really been transformed!

This evenings reveal session is a chance to see the completed piece in all its glory and re-live some of the key points that have marked making the mural a reality from the initial conversations where we wondered if we could!

Because this session is after hours, your Ed leader will meet attendees at the second barrier on Mallard Way. This will also be the collection point.

Join Conservation Rangers - a group of young volunteers - and get some hands on experience of managing a nature reserve and recording the wildlife. You'll gain new skills and get involved in conservation tasks including surveying, planting and painting tasks during these sessions.

These volunteering hours can count towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award or can be recorded as work experience on your CV, plus you’re helping to do your bit for the environment!

Please dress for the weather and bring suitable waterproof clothing. Wear sturdy boots/footwear.

Activities across different sessions may include:

  • Hand tool use
  • Painting
  • Planting
  • Grass cutting and raking
  • Litter picking
