About the event

Ever wanted to learn more about the uses of seaweed? How the tides work? How and where to collect seaweed? How to press beautiful specimens of seaweeds and how to identify them? 

On Saturday 4th July, you can book onto either a morning or afternoon workshop to learn all the above and more, and a chance to delve in a press your own fresh seaweed specimens collected from the North East coast.  

The workshop is delivered in collaboration with Claire from Craft and Nature Creations. Craft and Nature Creations is run by Claire based in Saltburn by the Sea, who enjoys sharing the beauty of nature. Claire has been pressing seaweeds for a few years now and will be bringing her pressed herbarium specimens along to the workshop to show examples of what can be achieved.  

All equipment will be provided including trays, buckets, fresh seaweed, and cardboard presses to take home your pressed herbarium specimens. No previous knowledge required.  

Thanks to funding from Stronger Shores, places are free to participants, however they are limited to 10 attendees for the morning and 10 attendees for the afternoon. Booking is essential.

Please note this workshop is fully indoors, as we will bring the seaweeds to you! 

Age Range: suitable for adults and children ages 12+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult) 

Facilities: Parking is available free of charge on site. There are toilets and a café in the building. 

What to bring: We will provide all equipment and materials however feel free to bring a notepad and pen if you wish to take notes. 

Accessibility: The workshop takes place indoors on the ground floor, with step-free disabled access from disabled car parking spaces in front of the building and a disabled toilet next to the room where we will hold the workshop. Please get in touch with the session leader, Martina, by email on mbristow@durhamwt.co.uk to discuss any specific access requirements prior to the session so that we may best assist you.
