Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, Houghton-le-Spring, DH4 6PUAbout the event
The session will start with a short introduction and briefing before making our way towards Joe’s Pond to see the wildfowl and water life there.
We will carry on past the flower meadow – looking for winged invertebrates before continuing around Nicholson Hill.
We will be watching for damselfly and dragonfly as well as butterflies and birds.
We will be thinking about the inter-relationships between the sites plants and animals – and factoring the seasons and recent weather patterns against what we see.
We will end up at the main bird hide which has seen a range of birding successes this summer including first time avocets, common tern and little ringer plover, alongside the grebes, wildfowl, cormorants and gulls.
The session is open to people of all ages, however attendees under 18 will need to be with a supervising adult.
Please wear weather-appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. Wellingtons are not necessary.
The visitor centre has toilet facilities, plus a coffee shop and gift shop.
