About the event
‘Wild about Brain Health’ is a scheme of activities and workshops which aim to reduce and identify dementia risk by promoting healthier lifestyles, through nature-based activities.
The sessions, which form part of a co-operative project between Durham Wildlife Trust and Alzheimer's Research UK, offer a range of outdoor engagement activities and discussions, aimed at those who may be experiencing or are interested in issues related to dementia and cardiovascular health. These will include bird nest box making, dead-hedge laying, habitat development and helping to develop a tree ID trail.
This is an additional session to initial scheme of 12. For this session we will explore part of the reserve that is usually off-limits to most visitors. We will undertake a light task to create habitats for invertebrates, small mammals and amphibians. We will also manage part of the path to ensure that school guest can access some of the areas safely
Following this, we will return to the centre for a tea or coffee and a workshop discussion where we will consider ways we can use outdoor interactions, lifestyle options and life hacks to help reduce the risk of dementia. We will also look at outdoor engagement as a coping mechanism to help promote brain health.
By the end of the session we will share a range of suggestions and ideas to help people improve their brain health.
Please come dressed for outdoor activities appropriate to the weather on the day.
