About the event

‘Wild about Brain Health’ is a scheme of activities and workshops which aim to reduce and identify dementia risk by promoting healthier lifestyles, through nature-based activities.

The sessions, which form part of a co-operative project between Durham Wildlife Trust and Alzheimer's Research UK, offer a range of outdoor engagement activities and discussions, aimed at those who may be experiencing or are interested in issues related to dementia and cardiovascular health.

The session will feature a chance to try your hand at fire-lighting using flint and steel. We will prepare a fire space, forage fuel, experiment with getting sparks – then seek to nurture the sparks into a workable fire. There may even be a few marshmallows for toasting…

Following this, we will return to the centre for a tea or coffee and a workshop discussion where we will consider ways we can use outdoor interactions, lifestyle options and life hacks to help reduce the risk of dementia. We will also look at outdoor engagement as a coping mechanism to help promote brain health.

By the end of the session we will share a range of suggestions and ideas to help people improve their brain health.

Please come dressed for outdoor activities appropriate to the weather on the day.
