Bottlenose dolphin by Emily Cunningham
Marine Week: Cetacean Watch with COAST Sunderland
Event details
About the event
Did you know our coastal waters are home to a number of cetacean species? That’s the group name for whales, dolphins and porpoises!
Join COAST Sunderland and Durham Wildlife Trust as we celebrate National Marine Week and World Conservation Day with a Cetacean Watch for marine mammals. Learn more about the different species that can be spotted from our shores as well as some handy identification tips.
Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen in this area during the summer months, but we might also be lucky enough to spot the shy Harbour Porpoise, the smallest cetacean found in UK waters. We will also keep a look out other marine mammals like grey seals as well as a variety of summer-visiting seabirds such as gannets and terns which can be seen diving offshore.
We will set up near the entrance to Roker Pier and record the species we spot. No binoculars? No problem, as we will have some available to borrow on the day. However, if you do have a pair then please bring them along!
This event is open to all ages but please note than under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear weather appropriate clothing.
We will be by the entrance to Roker Pier from 10am to 1pm, join us whenever you can, w3w///medium.gates.defend
There are public toilet facilities available about a five minute walk away, and Pay and Display parking is available nearby.
This event is funded by the Sea Changers grant.
